Minus a Red

Yesterday, I noticed the runt of the litter wasn’t gaining weight like the others.  They have about doubled in size in just a few days. DD3 and I watched them for a while, just because they are amusing to watch, and kept an eye on the little Red.  She seemed okay.  She was eating and drinking, but I noticed she kept falling asleep.  I was asked, “Is there such a thing as a narcoleptic chicken?”  I laughed, and said, “I don’t think so.”

My first instinct was to separate her from the rest into her own brooder, but we had a snow storm going, and I needed to go buy a new heat lamp before I could.  I could get away with small bowls for the water and feed but the heat lamp is a must.   Everyone kept checking on her for the rest of the day, and she seemed okay.  I just couldn’t shake the feeling that she was having trouble even though she didn’t really look like it by the time I went to bed.

This morning, I checked the chicks who had pasted up to make sure they were clear and discovered others had pasted up.  Looks like I’ll be cleaning chick butts today.  I noticed the little red off to the side.  It looked like she was sleeping again. When I take the top off of the brooder, mass panic ensues no matter how slowly or carefully I try to remove it.  She hadn’t moved.  Picking her up, it was obvious she was gone.  At first I kicked myself over not moving her to another brooder, but logically she would’ve died there also.   I didn’t have a way to heat it.

Even if they are technically for food, it’s still sad to lose a life.
